The first response to hair that is below expectations is usually a trip to the product aisle. There are countless conditioners, treatments, serums, and so on that claim to make hair thicker and healthier. But some experts say that lifestyle changes and less dependence on products will yield superior results.

Hair health can be indicative of overall healthiness. The thick growth of strong hair depends on factors like hydration, blood supply, nutrition, and circulation. If these factors are causing one’s hair to thin and break, no amount of conditioner or serum will repair the damage.

Staying well hydrated has a multitude of benefits and healthier, more beautiful hair is among them. Drinking plenty of water is a must. Enriching one’s diet with foods that contain silica and sulfur, like onions, garlic, green leafy vegetables and eggs will also help. Sulfur helps skin fight inflammation and poor circulation, leading to a healthier scalp and less hair left behind in the shower drain or hair brush. Iodine and potassium rich foods, like seaweed, can lead to hair that’s thicker and silkier.

And beware quick-fix products. While product treatments may provide a temporary fix, it’s often illusory. Rather than actually making hair healthier, these products may damage hair even as they’re making it appear healthier. The benefit will disappear when the product washes out, but the damage will remain.
