There are many varieties of full sized roses now available which are low maintenance, hardy, and disease resistant. But for gardeners who want an even more manageable rose, mini-roses are an excellent alternative.
Mini-roses are true roses which have been cultivated to a smaller size. Not only do the plants not attain the large size of regular rose bushes, but the leaves and blossoms are in proportion, making miniature roses a delicate looking, and charming, addition to any garden. Gardeners shouldn’t be fooled by their fragile appearance, however. These tiny roses are in many cases tougher than their bigger cousins.
Simply by virtue of being smaller, mini-roses are easier to prune than traditional roses. And belying their ethereal looks, they are much more winter hardy than most rose hybrids.
The ultimate factor in making mini-roses more desirable to gardeners looking for a low-maintenance rose is their outstanding performance when planted in containers. Containers offer the gardener a great deal more control over certain conditions affecting the plant. And because mini-roses are ever-blooming, having this increased control will produce dramatic, gorgeous plants. By using outdoor containers (mini-roses do not grow well indoors, lacking sufficient light and humidity), gardeners can very easily monitor and adjust water levels and fertilization.
